The PointDeviation command uses colored line hairs to visualize the distance between geometry objects.

  • Measured objects can be point objects, point clouds, curves, polylines, surfaces, polysurfaces, extrusions, meshes, and SubD.

Point objects, mesh vertices, and cloud points are directly used to measure. Analysis mesh vertices are used for other object types.

  • Target objects can be curves, surfaces, polysurfaces, extrusions, and meshes.

Steps

  1. Select objects to measure, and press Enter.
  2. Select the target objects.
  3. Change options in the Point Deviation panel.

Point Deviation panel

Start Analysis

Runs the PointDeviation command to start a new measurement.

Stop Analysis

Stops measuring the current objects.

Copy Results to Clipboard

Copies the statistics to Clipboard.

Settings

Ignore

Points with a distance equal to or greater than this value are not included in the analysis.

Bad

Points with a distance equal to or greater than this value are considered bad and displayed in red.

High / Medium / Low

Define intermediate deviation ranges between Bad and Good. These values are calculated from the Bad and Good values. Points with a distance equal to or greater than these values display in the specified colors.

Good

Points with a distance less than or equal to this value are considered good and displayed in blue.

  • Red numbers indicate the distances entered are invalid. For example, the bad point distance is smaller than the good point distance.
  • Click a color swatch to change the display color.
Proximity angle

Points qualify for display if the hair line is this close to the normal direction on either the curve or the surface. Default is 1 degree. No points disqualify at 180.

Hair scale

The hair is exaggerated by this factor from the actual distance to the curve or surface. Default is 10.

Curve divisions

Specifies the points to sample along the evaluated curves.

Surface min point count

Specifies the points to sample along the evaluated surfaces.

Show hairs

Display the hair line for each qualifying point.

Create hairs

Create a line object when the command terminates. Line objects are created on layers with names "Point Test <color>".

Results

Evaluated points

The number of point objects or sample points being analyzed.

Average distance

The mean distance between the evaluated points and the target object.

Median distance

The median distance between the evaluated points and the target object.

Standard deviation

The standard deviation distance between the evaluated points and the target object.

Maximum distance

The distance from the farthest evaluated point to the target object.

Minimum distance

The distance from the nearest evaluated point to the target object.

Command-line option

Visible (Yes / No / Toggle)

Displays or hides the Point Deviation panel, or change its visibility.

CurveDivisions (For curve only)

Specifies how many sample points to spread along a measured curve to evaluate deviation.

  • When a line or polyline is measured, segment endpoints are also evaluated.

SurfaceMinPointCount (For surface only)

The minimum number of sample points generated per surface for deviation evaluation.
