The Markup command lets you annotate over viewports to communicate ideas or provide feedback without touching the model geometry. Markups are view-based, saved with the 3dm file, and can be restored at any time for review.
Steps

Run the Markup command.

Click a model or layout viewport to start a new markup session.
If an active detail view is selected, the markup session starts in its parent layout.

Use the HUD buttons to create markup objects.

When finished, click the Save button
.

EditMarkup
Prompts for a TableIndex number to edit a specific markup.
ViewMarkup
Prompts for a TableIndex number to view a specific markup.

Controls the visibility of the Markups panel.
HUD elements
The HUD buttons run special commands for markup sessions.

Running a markup* command outside of markup mode creates new markup.

The HUD element size is controlled by the toolbar button size setting.

Markup tool supports different modifiers that control the appearance and drawing behavior of markup objects.

Some modeling aids are disabled depending on the active markup tool.
Sketch
Draws freehand curve.
Modifiers
Arrowhead
Adds an arrowhead at the end of a new sketch or polyline.
Tapered
Uses a tapered width for sketches.
Command-line options
Closed
Smoothly connects the start and end of the sketch curve.
Smooth
Reduces jitter in the sketch curve.
ClickToSketch
Draws the sketch without holding down the left mouse button.
Undo
Reverts the last sketching action.
Polyline
Draws a polyline.
Modifiers
Arrowhead
Adds an arrowhead at the end of a new sketch or polyline.
Cloud
Draws a revision cloud consisting of arcs.
Filled
Draws a polyline. If Persistent Close is enabled, the closed polyline is filled with a solid hatch.
Persistent Close
Keeps the polyline closed during drawing.

RevCloud
Draws a revision cloud consisting of arcs with a static 32-pixel arc length.
Filled
Draws a polyline. If Persistent Close is enabled, the closed polyline is filled with a solid hatch.
PersistentClose
Determines whether the polyline is open or closed.
Arrowhead
Adds an arrowhead at the end of a new sketch or polyline.
Close
Adds a straight segment between the start and end of the polyline.
Undo
Reverts the last drawing action.
Aligned Dimension
Creates an aligned dimension object.

Rectangle
Draws a rectangular polyline.

Cloud
Draws a revision cloud consisting of arcs.
Filled
Draws a polyline. If Persistent Close is enabled, the closed polyline is filled with a solid hatch.

Draws a revision cloud consisting of arcs.
Filled
Fills the rectangle with a solid hatch.

Text
Adds an annotation text.
Eraser
Erases parts of existing markup objects except text.
The affected markup objects are converted into solid hatches.
LineType
Sets the linetype used by markup tools.

Click the Open Linetypes panel button to edit the linetype settings.
Color
Choose a color for new markup objects.
Preset colors
Stores four recently used colors for reuse.
Thickness slider
Controls the thickness of markup objects and text height.

Click the
button to add the current thickness as a preset. Up to three thickness presets can be saved. -
Click a
button to use the thickness preset. -
Right-click a
button to delete the thickness preset.
Edit mode actions
Copy image to clipboard
Runs the ViewCaptureToClipboard command to capture the current view without the UI elements.
Cancel
Quits the Markup mode and discards the edits.
Save
Saves the current Markup view.
Internally, the markup view is stored as a Picture surface with the UI elements excluded.
Create New Markup
Creates a new markup.

Click a viewport to begin a new markup session.
View manipulation in the perspective view is disabled during the session.
Edit Selected Markup
Edits the selected markup.
Delete Selected Markup
Deletes the selected markup(s).
Export Selected Markup
Saves the view(s) of the selected markup(s) as .jpg image files.
Copy to clipboard
Copies the selected markup to the clipboard for pasting into other applications or Rhino itself.

When pasting into Rhino, a Picture surface of the markup view is created.
Context menu
Right-click a markup thumbnail to show the context menu.
Delete
Deletes the selected markups from the model.
To review a markup

Double-click a markup in the Markup panel to enter the viewing mode.
Markups can be created in model or layout viewports. When a markup is restored, the viewport where it was created is activated.
Viewing Mode
The viewing mode allows you to inspect existing markups and navigate through them.
Navigation bar
The navigation bar is located in the upper-right corner of the viewport.

It shows the name of the current markup.

Click the left or right arrow buttons to navigate through existing markups.

Markups are stored as Picture surfaces. The slider adjusts the transparency of the Picture surface.
Viewing mode actions
Edit
Switches to the editing mode.
Cancel
Exits the viewing mode and returns to the standard Rhino viewport.
